Dictionary of VMware Terms

AD Active Directory
AirWatch A mobile device management (MDM) solution from VMware. Now often referred to as Workspace One.
App Volumes A VMware solution for dynamically applying software titles based for Horizon, Citrix XenApp & XenDesktop, and RDSH virtual environments.
App Volumes Agent A Agent installed on the guest os of the workspace to accept AppStacks and writable volumes.
Application Pools App (application) pools provide direct sessions to application(s). Normally run off a farm resources.
AppStack A package of applications in App Volumes that is applied to users/machines by being assigned to AD objects.
Attachment The vCenter function of taking the AppStack VMDK and joining it to the workspace.
Available A machine with the status of “Available” is on the network with an active View Agent ready to accept Horizon connections.
AVM Abbreviation for App Volumes Management. The management piece for managing AppStacks.
AWS Amazon Cloud
Blast A protocol used in the Horizon suite for connecting users to their workspaces.
Blast Extreme The same thing as Blast.
Citrix XenApp A Citrix solution for providing users direct access to applications.
Citrix XenDesktop A Citrix solution for providing users access to a workspace (desktop).
Cloud Architecture A minimum of two pods joined together in a cloud pod federation to provide redundancy and/or service different use cases/geographic regions.
Cluster A series of hosts grouped together to form a cluster. Clusters provide a grouping of resources which can provide redundancy, DRS, and easier management.
Connection Server The server responsible for connecting the user and the workspace together in the Horizon suite.
Customizing A machine with the status of “Customizing” is currently going through Clone-Prep or Sys-Prep and added to the domain.
Datastore Storage attached to the host(s) for storage of VMs, virtual disks, and other resources to be used for ESXI.
Dedicated Pool A pool where users are assigned certain machines. Machines are assigned to a particular user.
DirectFlex The engine used by UEM for the importing and exporting of user data and program settings.
Entitlements Pool, farm, or application permissions that allow authenticated Horizon users to connect to resources inside the pod.
Farms RDS hosts cloned to provide the computer resources for Horizon connections. Normaly used with Application Pools for application session hosting.
flat.vmdk When you download a large VMDK from a datastore, the vmdk will be broken up into .VMDK and flat.VMDK. The Flat file contains the bulk of the contents. When uploading you will be required to upload the VMDK and the Flat file which will be merged automatically.
Floating Pool A pool where users are not assigned certain machines. Machines are distributed at random.
Forking A point in which all changes are written to a delta disk. Complicated VMware proprietary processes.
Global Entitlements Pool, farm, or application permissions that allow authenticated Horizon users to connect to resources in the Horizon Environment (can be more than one Pod).
Golden Image A template image that is used to create a desktop, server pool, or RDSH farm.
GPO Group Policy Object(s)
GRID A solution by NVIDIA to provide GPU virtualization.
HOL Hands On Labs – A VMware solution for getting a hands on experience with their products. URL: HOL.VMware.com
Horizon Client A software client available so users can connect to Horizon workspaces.
Horizon Web Client The HTML access available for users to connect to Horizon workspaces.
Hosts Physical server(s) with ESXI to provide server resources such as CPU, RAM, and Disk.
Identity Manager A Vmware solution for conditional in Workspace One and Horizon access and single sign on.
Instant Clone Through the use of VM forking, it is a faster cloning of a machine or template. All changes are written to a delta disk. This disk is normally for temporary purposes only such as Dev, Non-persistent VDI, etc.
JMP (Just in-time management platform) A combination of UEM and App Volumes to present users a customized desktop.
Kiosk A workspace that can be accessed unauthenticated
Linked Clone A clone of a machine or template that uses the original disk as read only and acts as a separate machine.
Machine Managers This is an App Volumes term to linked Vsphere or ESXI hosts or VHD. This is who App Volumes needs to talk with to mount and unmount AppStacks.
Mirage A VMware solution for maintaining physical computers and their imaging.
Non-Persistent A machine that files/settings/and applications installed by the user are deleted at logoff. The temporary files must be saved outside of the VM.
NSX A VMware solution for abstracting the network layer of VMs.
OVA Essentially the same thing as an OVF.
OVF A filetype that can be imported to Vsphere that has much of the configuration and OS already setup. An excellent way to distribute templates and how Vmware distributes their appliances.
Parent Image A template image that is used to create a desktop, server pool, or RDSH farm.
PCoIP A protocol used in the Horizon suite for connecting users to their workspaces. This protocol was developed by Teradici.
Persistent A machine that a user can use with files/settings/and applications always being present.
Pod A cluster consisting, of a minimum, a connection server, a vCenter, and hosts to run pools or farms.
Pools A series of machines cloned off a template to provide separate workspaces and computing power for Horizon connections.
Provisioning A machine with the status “Provisioning” is currently being cloned and inventoried in vCenter.
Provisioning Machine A machine that is used as a blank canvas to easily provide a delta of changes made during a Thinapp or AppStack provisioning (creation).

RDSH Remote Desktop Session Host
Replica Server An additional server responsible for handling connecting the user and the workspace together in the Horizon suite.
Server Server is referred to as a desktop a user accesses running a Server OS.
Teradici A company that built the PCoIP protocol and PCoIP chipsets as well as a management plane for devices utilizing the PCoIP chipsets.
Thin App A Vmware solution for creating sandboxed programs or portable programs housed with all their dependencies.
Thin Client A client with minimal hardware used normally for connecting to virtual workspaces. Normally Linux guest OS.
UAG (Unified Access Gateway-formerly security connection server) A DMZ based connection broker for Horizon
UEM (User Environment Manager) A VMware solution for importing/exporting user data and settings to a virtual workspace. Can give persistent feeling to workspaces.
vCenter A centralized management plane of host(s).
VDI Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (normally Horizon, Citrix, RDS)
vDs Virtual Distributed Switch
VM Virtual Machine
VMDK The virtual disk used for storing all the virtual machines files and contents.
VMDK.metadata Information vSphere will use about how the machine is to be run and settings of that virtual machine.
Vmware Tools A toolset containing important drivers for performance and management features through Vmware consoles.
VMWorld A annual conference held by VMware. This conference showcases all the VMware products and third-party solutions.
vSs Virtual Standard Switch
Workspace A desktop or application that a user uses to conduct work.
Workspace One A Vmware product line for mobile device management. It also integrates with Vmware Horizon and Identity Manager.
Zero Client A client with minimal hardware used solely for connecting to virtual workspaces. Normally PCoIP chipset.
